Abstract

25,638. Waterhouse, A. G., and Bourne, T. F. Nov. 6. Alcoholic liquids, distilling ; progressive evaporators.-In order to ensure the complete removal of the alcohol or other volatile body, the supply of liquid to a still is regulated in accordance with the temperature of the exhausted liquid by means of a thermostatic device in which the pressure of an expansible fluid controls the supply valve. The still 4 is divided into two compartments c, d, by a floor 9. The ccmpartment d is provided with pockets 7 and partitions 8, so that the liquid traverses a zigzag path between the inlet 3 and the discharge pipe 10 leading to the compartment c. A pipe 14 in the compartment c contains a volatile fluid, such as alcohol solution, the pressure of which acts on a diaphragm 12 against an adjustable weight 16 or a spring, and thus controls the supply valve 11. The liquid is preliminarily heated in an exchanger 2 by means of the exhausted liquid leaving the still by a pipe 5. The compartments c, d communicate by pipes 17, 20 with a condenser or rectifier 40, from which a reflux pipe 22 returns to the still, while the desired distillates are condensed in a worm 24 by the cooled exhausted liquid from the exchanger 2. Surface condensers.-The condenser 40 comprises tubes mounted in a casing having an air-inlet 41 and an air-outlet 42 controlled by a damper 43.
