Openers.-In a machine for opening and cleaning cotton, cotton waste, wool, wool waste, feathers, animal and vegetable down, and such like fibrous material, the material is fed by a hopper feeder 1, Fig. 2, or other suitable device into one end of a chamber 10 having two horizontal shafts 5, 6 rotating in the same direction and carrying helically-mounted beaterblades, the blades of one shaft being interposed between the adjacent blades of the other and parallel thereto. Teeth 23 arranged in any convenient place are employed to obtain a combing or further opening action. Beneath the shafts 5, 6 are arranged grids comprising bars 8 freely mounted in frames 25, Fig. 4, and keyed to belts, links, or frames 11 having projections 12 to which are attached rods 14 whereby the inclination of the bars 8 can be adjusted for different qualities of material. Above the beater-blades are mounted a series of vanes 19 carried in suitable brackets and provided with mechanism similar to that used with the bars 8 for adjusting the angularity. A suction fan 17 is connected at the feed end of the machine with the space beneath the grids, and the dirt, dust, and foreign material falling through the grids may be carried away by a scroll conveyor 18, or by additional fans and dust trunks. The material is delivered from the machine through any suitable outlet, and the delivery may be effected by the centrifugal force of the beaters, or by a fan situated on the beater shaft 6, or in any other way. The velocity of the material through the machine may be varied by altering the angularity of the vanes 19, or by regulating, by means of the fan 17, the velocity of the air through the grids.
