Abstract
24,047. Poate, F. W., and Fawcett, Preston, & Co. Oct. 20. Multiple - acting piston pumps ; actuating by gasengines; regulating delivery by opening suction valves.- Comprises a multiple-cylinder pump, driven by a gas or oil engine, for supplying hydraulic presses, the pump cylinders being arranged in groups which are adapted to be successively cut out of operation by a .centrifugal governor as the engine slows down owing to the increased pressure in the pump delivery. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement in which twelve pump cylinders 1 are arranged in groups of four driven from a common driving-shaft by eccentrics which are arranged at 90 degrees to one another in each group, the leading eccentrics of each group being at 120 degrees to each other. The eccentrics work in a closed oil chamber. The cut-out mechanism for the pumps consists of cams 19, Fig. 2, co-operating with weighted levers 21 which, when released, keep the suction valves 22 open as soon as they are lifted by the suction stroke of the pump. The cams 19 are mounted on shafts 17, which are rotated step by step by the governor device shown in Fig. 4. The governor is driven by means of bevel-wheels on the end of the driving-shaft 3, Fig. 1, and controls the position of a hit-and-miss bowl 27, which is interposed between a constantly-rotated cam 33 and the ratchet-device shown when the speed of the engine slackens, and thus rotates the shafts 18, 17. The ratchet-wheel 30 has one tooth less than the number of powers of the pumps, so that the pumps supplying the pressure water to the " finishing-ram " cannot be cut out. As the ratchet-device only operates in one direction, the governor cannot throw the pumps into operation again, this being effected by hand. An indicator operated by the shafts 17, 18 serves to show how many pumps are in operation. Leakage, detecting; suction reservoirs.-The valve casings 44 and the valve seats 41, 43 are mounted in such a manner that any leakage therefrom shall be readily visible, the jointmaking packing being arranged as near the outside as possible. The suction pipes 16 draw their supply from tanks 15, which can be lowered to facilitate cleaning.
