Planes, construction of; steering.-The ribs 5 of the elevator taper towards the forward end, where they are connected to the framework of the machine in order that they may assume the desired curvature when their near ends are displaced. In the biplane form shown in Fig. 1, the elevator framework is hinged to uprights 3 hinged at 9 to the main framework 10 and is supported with limited movement intermediate its length from uprights 7 by links 8. The free ends 6 of the framework are connected together by uprights 15 and are operated by connecting-rods 18, levers 17, and connecting- rod 20. The tapering of the ribs 5 is preferably more pronounced between the points 1, 4 than between the points 6, 4. In a modification, the intermediate support at 4 is dispensed with, and the forward ends of the ribs 5 are secured to a fixed framework.
