Arc lamps.-In an inclined-carbon lamp, an horizontally-moving lever l, Fig. 2, carrying the curved armature m of series and shunt electromagnets, or connected to the cores of solenoids, actuates a feed-screw c and a shaft i for striking the arc. The lever is also attached to a spring and a dash-pot piston. The feed-screw carries a finelytoothed ratchet-wheel s actuated by a pawl r on the lever, and is engaged by the ends of pawls 3 on a sleeve 2 connected to the sliding carbon-holders. The pawls 3 slip freely over the screw when the sleeve is pulled down to raise the carbon-holders for trimming. A slotted arm j on the shaft i engages a pin on the lever l. A second arm t, Fig. 5, at the lower end of the shaft consists of two mutually-insulated pieces and is yieldingly connected to a slide y on the base-plate, one of the electrodes passing through this slide. The shaft i is contained in one of two tubes e forming the lamp-frame. The mechanism is completely enclosed between a plate a and cover b, the only openings in the plate being filled by the shaft i and screw c. A cast-iron economizer, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, has its rim thickened at each side of the arc, which is normally just below the edge of the rim. This arrangement renders the use of an arc-deflecting magnet unnecessary.
