Abstract

21,179. Barbour, R. H. Sept. 16. Collecting-rings. -The collecting- rings of homopolar and other dynamo machines are supported in one or more groups, so that there is a clear annular air space between the inner periphery of the rings and the shaft or core. In the homopolar construction shown in end and sectional views in Figs. 2 and 3, the rings b are supported on insulated bolts d, which are bedded in the central pole c<1> of the core a and in a ring c at its end. They are separated from one another by insulating- washers e, and the air-space a' is in connexion with the outer air through end passages a<2>. The axial expansion of the rings may be allowed for by making the separators of a springy nature, or by providing a yielding laminated end abutment for the group of rings. The rings are connected to the armature by insulated conductors passing through holes in the rings.
