20,771. Russell, F. W. Sept. 11. Calculating-apparatus; transfer mechanism. - Micrometer gauges are adapted to g i v e readings in both English and metric measure. The micrometer screw 23 has two threads to the millimetre, and metricai readings are taken from the sleeve 25 and thimble 26 in the usual way. The English reading to thousanths of an inch is given on rings 18, 19, 20 bearing in a barrel 17 formed with the bow frame of the gauge and showing through an aperture 21. Each drum has two series of digits and two sets of transfer teeth 35, 36 and grooves 39, which engage every half revolution with long and short toothed pinion 41 to carry on to the next ring. The lowest ring is fitted with a key 33 and a retaining-spring 46 to press it into engagement with a spiral groove 29 made in the sliding jaw 15. The correct position of the units disk is maintained by a sleeve 47<a> pressed by a spring 48 held by a sleeve 47 screwed into the frame 17. The micrometer screw nut 22 is slit and has a nut 51 to take up backlash.
