Abstract

20,612. Jarvis, D. J. Sept. 9. Planing and moulding; mitering; tools &c.-An appliance for cutting and shaping the edge of boards, mitering the edges of picture mouldings, &c. comprises a body or frame 1 fixed to a suitable support, a work-table 3 slidably mounted on the frame 1, and cutters 5, 5<a> mounted so that either cutter can be brought into the operable position on a turntable 21, which is secured by a screw 23 to a plate 22 sliding on a frame 24 ; this is adjusted vertically on the main frame 1 by means of a screw 31 and secured by bolts 24<c>. The work 4 is held in position on the table 3 against a protection strip 4<a> in front of a pivoted fence 11 by a face clamp 18 and an edge clamp 19. The fence 11 may be set at any desired angle on the table 3 by means of index marks, and is fixed in position by a bolt passing through a slot 11<b> into one of a series of tapped holes in the table. The cutting-tool is traversed in front of the table 3 by a hand-lever 28 connected by a link 25 to the plate 22 ; and the table 3 is moved to bring the work into the path of the cutter by a hand-lever 10 operating through a rack and pinion &c. In alternative or modified arrangements, (1) the work fence is adjustable to either the right or left hand, and the cutter is provided with a cutting-edge at opposite ends (2) the cutters are traversed between two tables, each provided with an adjustable work-fence ; (3) the work-table may be arranged to cant ; or (4) an auxiliary work-table is mounted rotatably on the main table so as to allow any number of edges to be operated upon without removing the work.
