Boot-sole sewing machines; horns.-In a horn for boot-sole sewing machines, the looper k is driven through bevel-gearing i<2>, j by a flexible shaft c passing through the centre of the horn. The horn is clamped to the machine-frame b<1>; and the flexible shaft, the lower end of which is held by a split chuck d, is driven from the shaft f<1> by gearing e, e<1>, e<2>. The shaft c is joined at the other end to a spindle i by a pin-and-slot connexion. The wax-thread passes from the tensioning-device n<1> to the looper through a channel m<1> in a plate m is fixed in a groove on the face of the horn. The plate is held in place by a ferrule o, which slips over the upper end, and a heating-box p, which slips over the conical lower end. This box is supplied with warm air by a gas-burner q<2>. The threadchannel is covered at the top end of the horn by a plate q held in place by an elastic split ring formed in one with it. By the use of a flexible shaft, the dimensions of the horn are reduced sufficiently to enable boots with narrow tips to be sewn.
