Abstract

Rotary distributors and interrupters.-In magnetoelectric ignition mechanism for internal-combustion engines, the contact-breaker is mounted on a plate which is placed on the side of the armature shaft and fixed to the disk of the armature hy means of a bolt, which can be directly operated by hand to allow the withdrawal of the plate without the aid of tools. The plate 2, carrying an insulated contact 3, is connected to the primary of the armature through a small plunger 4 placed in an insulated socket 5 in the disk 1. The other contact 8 is carried by a lever 7, which pivots in a projection on the plate 2 and is pressed against the contact 3 by a spring 9. When the armature revolves, the other end of the lever is brought into contact with two fixed cams 10, which rock the lever and cause the interruption of the circuit twice for each revolution of the armature. The rear face of the plate 2 carries a prism-shaped stud 11 provided with a hole 12 which is engaged by a pin 14 in a recess 13 on the disk 1. The pin 14 is surrounded by a spring 15, which tends to separate the plate 2 from the disk 1; the plate 2 is normally held in place agaiust the action of the spring by a spring-pressed bolt 16, which engages a hole 17 in the plate 2. The bolt 16 can be disengaged from the plate 2 by turning a small lever 19, mounted in the periphery of the disk 1 and provided with a slotted stud 20 which engages a bolt 22 connected to the bolt 16 by a cross-piece 23. The lever 19 can be turned either by hand, when it is desired to remove the contactbreaker, or by pressing the plate 2 against a projection 25 when the contact-breaker is being replaced. The cams 10 comprise small cylinders of fibre fixed in a metal ring 27 provided with two projections 28, in one or the other of which, according to the direction of rotation of the armature, an operating-knob 29 can be screwed, serving to modify the position of the ring in order to regulate the ignition. The high-tension currents are distributed by means of a contact plunger 30, which rubs against contact-pieces 31 connected to the plugs 33. The plunger 30 is carried by a pinion 34 which is geared to the armature so as to receive a speed of rotation equal to half that of the armature. The casing 32 carrying the contact-pieces 31 is fixed to the metal frame 37 by means of two rods 38 and a transverse spring strip 39.
