Abstract
19,988. Cross, T. W. J., Cross, C. G., and Marshall, G. Sept. 1. [Cognate Application, 6529/10.] Roundabouts.-In a roundabout, the cars 1, Fig. 1, consist of aeroplanes and are connected by radiating arms 3 and stays 4 to a lantern 2 fixed at the top of a central rotating shaft 7. Dummy propellers are attached to the cars, which may also be provided either with rudders for vertical steering or means for elevating and depressing the planes. The rods and stays may also be made extensible and controlled by springs, and the cars may be provided with rudders for horizontal steering. Extensions of the arms 3 support a disk 36 carrying an adjustable weight 38 contained within the shaft 7. The weight assists the lifting-force of the planes 9. The stays 4 remain parallel with the arm 3 and maintain the aeroplanes in a vertical position. Instead of using the disk 36, each arm extension may be connected by means of a link to the spindle carrying the weight. The extensions may be connected to the links by springs in order to allow each aeroplane some margin of movement. In a modification, the weight is connected by a rod 58, Fig. 11, to a collar 61 which is linked to a pivoted quadrant 65. The quadrant is geared with a pinion 66 rotated by a worm-shaft 70, on which is mounted a reversing-gear of the standard pattern. The gear is operated by a hand-lever 80, which works in a slot 87 in a link 88 connected to the quadrant 65. Accordingly, when the gear is put into operation, the quadrant is rotated in one direction or the other, and lifts or lowers the aeroplanes until it has travelled sufficiently far for the link 88 to force the lever 80 to its midposition. The quadrant may be replaced by a drum, on which a chain connected with the rod 58 is wound. In a modified method of connecting the cars to the arms 3, the cars may be pivoted so that they swing outwards under centrifugal force, the amount of movement being governed by springs and stops.
