Abstract

19,871. British Thomson-Houston Co., [General Electric Co.]. Aug. 30. Plant; reversing; driving and transmission mechanism, special applications of.-In a system of ship propulsion wherein a prime mover drives an electric generator which supplies current to a motor on the propeller shaft, the prime mover is capable of being reversed so that the circuit connexions between the generator and the motor may remain undisturbed. A reversible high-speed turbine 4, Fig. 1, drives the rotor of an electric generator 14, which is preferably of the multiphase synchronous type. The rotor forms the field magnet and is excited by a separate direct-current exciter 15. The current is taken from fixed terminals 19 by conductors 25 to a squirrel-cage induction motor 24, which drives the propeller 20. The turbine comprises forward and reversing elements mounted upon the same shaft and exhausting into a common exhaust port 33, Fig. 2, leading to a condenser 8. For certain conditions of working, the steam may be led from an outlet 36, Fig. 1, in the high-pressure turbine to a forwardly - running low - pressure turbine mounted upon the propeller shaft 21, the lowpressure stages of the high-pressure turbine being inoperative. When the low-pressure turbine is in. service, and it is desired to reverse the ship, the low-pressure turbine is cut out and the high-pressure turbine is caused to exhaust into the condenser 8. The invention is not confined to systems in which the prime mover is a turbine.
