Abstract

Distilling metals; dry processes of extracting metals. - In the extraction of volatile and other metals by supplying molten ore to the top of a red - hot fuel column, and withdrawing the products at the bottom, the supply of ore is stopped during the blast periods. The process may be worked continuously by using two or more coupled gasproducers or smelting-furnaces I., II. working alternately. Each producer is provided at its upper part with a water-cooled grate K, on which the ore is melted during the blasting-up of one of the fuel columns, the combustible products escaping through a pipe Q, and being consumed above the other fuel column, which has previously been blasted up. Any excess of gas can be utilized for heating boilers &c., or, when only one fuel column is used, for melting the ore in a reverberatory furnace. The metallic vapours are withdrawn through openings f to a condenser, and the slag, together with non- volatile metals, escapes through a tap-hole J.
