Abstract
19,386. MacIvor, R. W. E., Hommell, W., and Metals Extraction Corporation. Aug. 23. Briquetting and agglomerating processes. - Zinc oxide is rendered dense and suitable for smelting by treating with zinc-chloride solution and heating the resulting oxychloride to distil off the zinc chloride for re-use. The distillation may be assisted by reduced pressure. Strong zinc-chloride liquors from wet zinc processes may be utilized by precipitating by lime or other reagent all the zinc in a part of the liquor and mixing the precipitated oxide with the remainder of the zinc chloride. Carbonaceous material, such as anthracite, coke, or bituminous coal, sufficient to effect the reduction of the zinc oxide in the subsequent smelting, may be added to the mixture of oxide and chloride before the mixture sets, and the whole may be moulded into blocks which, after the expulsion of the zinc chloride, may be put into the smelting furnace. If electric smelting is used, the carbonaceous mixture may be moulded into plates, rods, or any convenient form, which, after removal of the zinc chloride, are used as electrodes in the zinc smelting furnace. Specification 16,312/96 [Class 1, Acids, alkalies, &c.] is referred to.
