Abstract
18,270. Brothers, E. Aug. 7. [Addition to 18,163/09.] Lasting.-The machine described is a modification of that described in the p a r e n t Specification, and consists, mainly, an improved arrangement of grippers. These are arranged, as shown in Fig. 19, for independent adjustment of the sections by means of pinions 70, to adapt them to crooked lasts having more swing on the one side than on the other. The wipers, instead of, being. formed on, or attached to, the gripper sections, are, in the present invention, separate from the grippers, and comprise plates 80, Fig. 1, removably-attached to body portions which are independently adjustable to the size and swing of the last similar to the adjustments for the gripper sections. After the upper has been stretched, the wipers are closed in by movement of a band-lever 90. To prevent the upper from slipping back, the wipers are provided with yieldingly-mounted side clamps 92, which are located to engage the upper at about the toe tip seam. There is also provided a toe rest 100, consisting of a large block of rubber or other yielding material mounted on a bent shank 102, which has operative connexions with the hand-lever 90. A pin-and-slot connexion permits the rest to be moved into operative position before the wipers force the upper over the last bottom, and also permits the wipers to be further advanced for lasting the upper without causing any alteration in the position of the rest. The rest, after being brought into this position, is moved towards and away from the shoe, to clamp the upper to the last, by means of an endless chain 108, a sprocket-wheel 106, and a coarse thread 105 on the shank 102. Afcer the upper has been wiped into lasted position, it is secured by tacks, which may be driven round the entire forward part of the shoe, or only at the sides, in which latter case a binder is used. Fig. 16 shows the tacking- mechanism, which is independent of the grippers, and is normally held out of the way of the pulling- over and lasting means. When required, it is moved forward by a lever 150 actuated by a treadle lever 155, and, when positioned, a swinging arm 157 automatically trips a latch 132 of the driver-setting mechanism to free a spring-controlled driver-head 124; which is impelled forwards to drive the tacks. These are in strip form 170, and are automatically fed through guides 172 by ratchets 174 actuated by the driver-head. The driver-tubes 120, through which the tacks are driven, carry holders 190 for a binder, which is fastened to the shoe by the tacks as they are driven.
