Abstract

17,863. Maggiora, D., and Sinclair, M. July 31. Rotary machines motors, controlling.-A motor having a single rotary member is provided with adjusting means for enabling it to be run off any supply system, whether alternating or direct current of any voltage or frequency, so that the power given out by the motor is practically constant. A series of stationary electro-magnets 10 ... 17, are energized so as to rotate an armature 19 having inclined blades 21. The coils of the electro-magnets are connected, through a distributing-switch 18, to contact-breakers 25, 26 having rollers 22 depressed in succession by a rotating cam having as many projections as there are blades 21. The coils 10, 11, 12, 13 have a large number of turns of fine wire, and the coils 14, 15, 16, 17 have a small number of turns of thick wire. When a direct current is used, each pair of coils 10,14 ; 11, 15 ; 12, 16 ; 13, 17 is put in series by means of the switch 18; with alternating- current the coils are put in parallel. In operation, a diametrically opposite pair of coils is energized at the same time, and co-operates with the pair arranged at right-angles thereto. Instead of connecting the coils in parallel and series according to the voltage and frequency of an alternating current supply, an auto-transformer 30, Fig. 13, may be used, with tappings 35, 36 on the primary side and tappings 38 on the secondary side. Only four electro-magnet coils 31, 32, 33, 34 are employed, and are connected to the tappings 38 through the contact-breakers 25, 26. The motors may be used for driving talking-machines, clocks, fans, &c.
