Abstract

17,213. Lake, W. E., [Gail, J. F.]. July 23. Tubes, treating. -Consists of a machine for polishing or buffing metallic tubes &c. for making bedsteads, in which the tube is reciprocated over the buffing-wheel, and is stepped round at the end of each reciprocation to present another surface to the wheel, the tube being swung away from the wheel after each passage, and the movement of the carriage being automatically stopped when the whole surface of the tube has been buffed. The buffing-wheel 26 is mounted on a shaft carried in a vertically-adjustable extension 126 of a standard 24, and is axially reciprocated by a cam 38. The tube 79 to be buffed is carried between head-stocks 68, 78 on a carriage mounted on guide-rods 22, 23, the two ends of the carriage being connected by a casing 60 enveloping the rods and carrying a rack 57 in gear with a pinion 56 on a shaft 47, which may be clutched to either of the oppositely-running belt drums 49, 50. Mounted rotatably at both ends upon the carriage is a rod 61 provided with an arm 74 carrying one of the headstocks 78 ; the other headstock 68, which is movable to allow the introduction of a tube to be buffed, is carried by an arm adjustable along a squared portion 63 of the rod 61 and adapted to be clamped thereto. A coiled spring around the rod 61 tends to urge the headstocks and tube towards the buffing-wheel. When the carriage approaches the right-hand end of its traverse, a roller 82 on the end of the arm 74 engages a cam-surface on the machine frame, which depresses the arm and headstocks away from the buffing-wheel ; at this point a second cam 85 engages one of a number of arms 80 mounted on an extension of the head carrying the tube, and the continued traverse of the carriage causes the head and tube to be rotated through one step, so as to present a new surface for buffing. The cam 85 is pressed upwards by a spring and, upon the reversal of the carriage, the arm 80 rides over it, and, being held by a pawl and ratchet-wheel, the head and tube are not further rotated. Mounted to slide and partly rotate in guides on the standard 24 is a rod 104 carrying adjustable stops adapted to engage projections on the carriage, so that, at each reciprocation thereof, the rod is moved slightly in the direction of the reciprocation; this rod carries a projection 120 which engages a notch in one end of a lever operating the clutch 53, so that, at the end of each travel of the carriage and rod, the direction of rotation of the shaft 47 is reversed. To the rod 104 is also fixed a cam-surface 106 which engages a roller 100 on a spring-retracted pawl-plate 97, thereby causing it to step round a toothed disk 93 mounted on the same axis 91. Attached to the disk is a notched plate 95 having one notch 96 deeper than the rest. At each travel of the carriage, this plate is stepped round one notch, and the roller 115 on an arm 113 escapes one notch and enters another. When it enters the deep notch it rises considerably, and a cam-surface 116 carried by it is caused to engage a projection 107 on the rod 104 and rotate the rod so that the projection 120 on the rod escapes from the notch in the end of the lever actuating the clutch 53 when it is in its unclutched position and the machine stops. To re-start the machine when another tube has been put in place, a cord 125 is pulled, which actuates the lever to re-couple it with the rod 104 and put the clutch in.
