Abstract

16,829. Woolery, Z. Z. July 19. Flying toys.-A toy parachute has ribs 11 normally pressed apart by springs 32, and carries a heavy figure 28 by a swivel pin 26. In operation the web or sail 20 is folded, and the ribs are held closed by a cord 15 coiled around the web and provided with a loop 17, which is slipped over a lug 23, Figs. 4 and 8, on a trigger 22, through a fork 25 of which the pivot pin 26 passes. A cord 21 is attached to one of the ribs, and the parachute is thrown by first whirling it around by means of the cord 21 and then releasing it. As the parachute ascends, the figure 28 exerts a slight pull on the pivot pin 26, but at the highest point reached this pull ceases and allows the trigger to move so as to release the cord 15. The springs 32 then operate to open the parachute, which turns over owing to the weight 28 and descends in normal position.
