Abstract

16,645. Dalziel's Constant Voltage Patents, and Dalziel, J. July 16. Lighting systems; boosting.-In a variable-speed dynamo distribution system of the type described in Specification 8717/06, a booster placed between the dynamo and the battery is driven by the prime mover or by the motor of the regulating-machines. A braking arrangement is also provided which does not allow the dynamo to take up the load unless the power of the prime mover is sufficient. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the booster d is mounted upon the shaft of the motor b driving the exciter e and controlling-machine c. The booster is provided with a shunt winding f and, in some cases, with a series winding g, in which case the charging-voltage of the battery B is varied. The winding g may carry the whole of the current or only that portion passing to the battery. When the voltage of the dynamo a reaches a predetermined value, the coil of the switch h causes the movable contact of the switch to bridge the contacts 1, 2, thereby connecting the dynamo a to the lamp circuit L and battery B through the contacts 3, 4 of the switch k. As the dynamo voltage tends to rise, the increasing pressure across the controlling-machine c causes the coil of the switch k to lift the movable contact of the switch to bridge the contacts 6, 7. In this position of the switch k, the booster d is placed between the dynamo a and battery B. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the booster d is driven by the prime mover. When the arrangement is employed with a motor generator, the motor element of which is supplied from a trolly line, the booster is preferably mounted upon the motor shaft. When it is more desirable to obtain a limited charging-voltage than a constant voltage, the motor field or the exciter field may be provided with another coil m, as indicated in dotted lines, or with a rheostat u.
