Abstract

16,609. Boult, A. J., [United Shoe Machinery Co.]. June 18, 1908. Channelling; slitting; bevelling &c.-In a channelling-machine having a support for a flat sole, a lipforming knife is arranged to act in conjunction with a bevelling - k n i f e acting upon the unlipped surface of the sole at its periphery. An edgeslitting knife, or a shouldering - knife, is included in the combination. Means are provided to support the unlipped surface of the sole in proximity to the bevelling-knife, which is adapted to m o v e with the usual adjustable e d g e - gauge. The work-support is arranged for adjustment transversely of the line of feed in unison with the chamfer or bevelling knife. The edgeslittings &c., and channelling knives may be raised from the work independently of each other during cutting. The channel-knife 70 and the edge-knife 76 are adjustably mounted in brackets attached to two spring-pressed elides. They are oscillated in the line of feed by a slide-carrier 34 hung between pivots 132. The tool-slides also carry pressergauges 72, 78 which engage the surface of the work to feed it on the forward stroke of the cutters, the work being held by a work-retainer 198 during the backward or cutting stroke. All these motions are produced by mechanism fully described in Specification 13,052/08, [Class 17, Boots &c.]. The work is supported by a work-table 120 mounted on a plunger 122 which may be depressed to introduce the work. The usual edge-gauge 210 projects over the work-table, and is adjustably clamped on a longitudinal slide 218 mounted on a transverse slide 212. The work-support and edgegauge are operated by mechanism such as is described in Specification 25,730/06, [Class 17, Boots &c.]. To bevel the unlipped face of the insole, a bevelling-knife 228 is adjustably clamped on the edgegauge slide 218, and projects above the work-table at an angle of about 45 degrees. The back is arranged against the forward side of the edgegauge to prevent false cutting around curves. In turned work, the shoulder-knife is lifted from the work while the channel and bevelling knives are operating around the heel. In welt and turned work for razor-toe shoes, the knives are run off and on again at the toe; the channel-knife is therefore raised as the angle of the channel at the toe is reached, and lowered when again opposite the angle of the channel. The upper ends of the channel and edge knife-slides each carry a pin 270, 272. These are engaged by levers 266, 268 loose upon a shaft 250. Either knife may be lifted independently by means of a lifter 282, which may be clamped to the shaft 250 in position to engage either of the pins 276, 278. The shaft 250 is rocked for this purpose by a spring-controlled lever 252, actuated by a treadle. The knives may be simultaneously removed from the work by means of stop screws 294 on a lever 290 loosely pivoted on the shaft 250. These screws engage heel pieces on the levers 266, 268. The lever 290 is operated by a connexion with the work-support.
