Sheet feeding and guiding arrangements.-Paperfingers are pivoted on their supports in such a way that each may be moved first transversely and next in a direction lengthways of the platen, the fingers being then temporarily locked so that the paper sheets may be directly manipulated and erasures made, for example, when manifolding work is being done, without turning the platen. Mounted so as to be laterally adjustable on a grooved rod 7 are slotted sleeves 19, Fig. 7, upon which are mounted hubs 27 supporting arms 35. The arms 35 are secured to pivot pins which rotate in extensions 28 of the hubs 27, and are provided with heads 32. Extensions 38 of the arms 35 accommodate pressure rolls 40 and are provided with operating-knobs 41 aud guide-fingers 44, 45. Springs 46 connect the sleeves 19 and extensions 28. In the upward swing of the fingers about the rod 7 against the action of the springs 46, the fingers cannot move laterally away from the side edges of the sheets under pressure on the knobs 41 until the heads 32 arrive opposite the slots in the sleeves 19. The rotation of the heads 32 into the slots locks the fingers in their upper position, and the portions of the sheets a, b, c above the paper-plate 18 are then free for making erasures &c. Stops 47 limit the movement of the heads 32. The parts are shown as applied to the Smith Premier machine, in which the platen carrier may be tilted upwards and backwards on pins 12 out of the way of the carriage-feeding and ribbon devices. At the end of the movement of the fingers to their extreme lateral position, the pressure on the knobs 41 is in the proper direction for tilting the platen carrier.
