Abstract

14,199. Eves, R. V. June 17. Hanks, treating; yarns and threads, stretching, softening, and polishing.-Hanks are twisted into kinks between pairs of hooks, one hook of each pair being carried by a weighted carriage, and the other being fixed in position and rotated by hand or power. Means are provided whereby, at the commencement of the operation, the carriage is almost completely counterbalanced, and no tension is applied to the hanks, while, as twist is put into the hanks and they become shorter, a gradually increasing portion of the weight of the carriage is brought into operation for stretching the hanks. Each chain E by which the carriage is suspended is attached at one end to the carriage and at the other to a double-grooved pulley E<1>. Another chain E<2> is attached at one end to the second groove of the pulley E and to a double-grooved pulley F<1>. Over the second groove of the pulley F<1> passes the weighted chain F. When the carriage is in its lowest position, it is counterbalanced by the weight W, but as it rises, the chain E<2> assumes the position shown in dotted lines, and the carriage is no longer balanced. As shown in Fig. 6 the pulleys E<1>, F<1> may be made of cam or eccentric shape as shown. To subject the hanks to high tension, hooks G<1> may be provided and caused to engage with pins on the carriage C, the hooks being moved longitudinally by screwed rods G and suitable nuts, which are operated from the shaft g<3> by the gearing shown, comprising spring-pressed clutches H which slip when the tension has reached a certain maximum. The screwed nuts G, the chain pulleys E<1>, and the shaft e<2> on which the pulleys F<1> are mounted, are provided with ball or roller bearings.
