Tyres, non-elastic, and rims.-In securing the tyres of railway wheels, molten metal 11, Fig. 4, is cast into a series of wedge-shaped spaces formed by the inner periphery 4 of the tyre, a series of eccentric surfaces 3 on the periphery of the wheel-centre, and a series of splines 9 shaped to conform to the curved or corrugated inner surface of the tyre and secured by wedges 7, 8 let into recesses 6. The shrinkage of the metal filling-pieces on cooling is taken up by caulking or by driving in wedges 10 at the thicker ends, sufficient clearance being left at the thin end. In a modification, the wheel-centre is cast with eccentric surfaces so as to form the wedgeshaped spaces in pairs with their narrow ends together as in Fig. 6. Splines 13, Fig. 8, tapered in two directions and wedges 14 tapered on all sides so as to form together a wedge tapered to one side of the wheel are inserted at the widest and narrowest parts of the annular space, and the molten metal is cast into the sectional spaces left. The shrinkage on cooling is taken up by withdrawing the splines 13 and wedges 14 and driving wedges into the spaces so left at the thicker ends of the filling-pieces. These wedges may also be withdrawn and all the spaces filled up by casting in metal; or they may remain, the spaces at the thinner ends being filled with properly-proportioned wedges.
