Armouring conductors.-Cables for house-wiring &c. are protected by embedding in the'lead sheath, by means of solder or other soft metal or not, an armouring of hard metal in the form of wire or strip, which prevents the cable from buckling or kinking at bends. Wires of brass, copper, steel, iron, or the like, and of circular or rectangular section, are embedded partly or wholly in the lead sheath, being spaced apart or placed close together. The wires are arranged longitudinally or helically, or are braided, solder or other soft metal being preferably run in to unite them integrally with the sheath. The lead sheath may be made thinner than is usual, and the wires and solder are conveniently applied on emergence from the lead-press by means of a hot die. The wires may be replaced by a metal strip wound one or more times around the cable, longitudinally or helically, and secured by solder.
