Abstract

13,094. Simonsson, W. June 3. Weighbridges. - Relates to apparatus for weighing railway vehicles, and consists in an arrangement whereby the machine may . be adjusted to weigh vehicles of different lengths. A pit 3 is provided between the rails, and contains a pair of levers 14 on which a rectangular platform-frame 4 is supported. The levers 14 are connected to a transverse lever 30, which is in turn connected to the counterbalancing and indicating means. The platform frame is steadied laterally by links 6, and supports, at one end, a stationary platform section 20, and at the other end, a platform section 24, Fig. 4, which may, by means of an electric motor 56 and suitable gearing, be traversed along the frame 4 to vary the distance between the two platform sections. Each section, as shown in Fig. 4, carries platform members 21, which may be simultaneously adjusted towards or away from the rails 1 by means of a suitable hand - lever. These platform members are adapted to bear under the flanges of the vehicle wheels and support the vehicle during.the weighing operation. In Fig. 9 is shown an electrical system whereby the motor 56 may be controlled to position correctly the platform section 24 for various lengths of vehicle. Conductors 112, 114 supply current to the field F of the motor 56 bv way of conductors 119, 120 and supply current to the motor armature A through a rheostat 116, shown in open circuit, and a reversing-switch 118. An electro-magnet 121, when energized, is adapted to retain, against spring pressure, the moving arm 115 of the rheostat over a contact 117. The motor 56 is connected, by means of gearing, to an arm 131, which is thus moved over contacts 133 corresponding to the lengths of the vehicles to be weighed. The moving arm is in electrical connexion with the field F, and the contacts 133 are connected to similar contacts 136 provided with an arm 138 conveniently situated for hand operation. In operation, the arm 138 is set over the contact corresponding to the length of the vehicle to be weighed, and the arm 115 is set over the contact 117 so as to be retained by the electro-magnet 121. As the motor rotates, the arm 131 is gradually moved over the contacts 133 until the circuit through one of the conductors 135, the arm 138, and an electro-magnet 140, is closed. The electromagnet 140 then attracts a conducting armature 144 and short-circuits the electro-magnet 121. The arm 115 is -thereupon released, and the current through the armature A is interrupted and the motor stopped. In a modification, the adjustable platform 24, Figs. 2 and 4, is replaced by a stationary section upon which are arranged end to end a number of pairs of the members 21 connected to one another and to the motor 56 by a system of links and gearing, so that any pair of members 21 may be'moved towards the rails ready to receive the flanges of the vehicle wheels, the remaining members being out of operation.
