Coating-compositions. - A celluloid substitute is produced by dissolving the variety of acetylcellulose which is soluble in acetone or ethyl acetate in a liquid which only exerts solvent action when heated to near its boiling-point, and then adding camphor or camphor substitutes. A suitable solvent is a mixture of ethyl alcohol or methylated spirit or other alcohol of the same series with benzene, toluene, or other hydrocarbon of the benzene series. The manufacture can be carried out by pouring the solvent from the precipitate which results when the acetylcellulose solution cools, and mixing with the precipitate camphor with or without acetyochlorhydrin. On heating the mass, a clear solution is obtained solidifying on cooling to a compact mass which may be worked by cutting, pressing, rolling, &c. The material may also be produced by mixing the acetylcellulose, solvent, and camphor or camphor substitute, such as a mixture of phenol and creosote, and heating until a clear liquid results as before. From the liquid manufactured as described above may be made coated fabrics.
