Locking nuts.-An undercut groove in the nut contains a key made from a doubled strip of spring metal, one arm of which engages with ratchet teeth cut in the thread of the bolt, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The key is prevented from moving longitudinally by an extension e, which springs into the grooves of the thread. In a modified form, the key lies in a recess in the bolt, and the teeth are cut in the nut, and, in this modification, the key may extend. the whole length of the bolt through a hole in the head. The function of the extension e may be performed by a protuberance e<4>, Fig. 7.
