Abstract

11,276. Johnson, J. Y., [Hoe & Co., R.]. May 12. Stereotype; printing- surfaces. - Relates to a machine for trimming and cooling curved stereotype plates. The plate is placed on a saddle A<2> from which it is slidden into a cylindrical shell B, which rotates in bearings a. The plate is positioned in the shell B by a projection on the plate taking into a groove h on the saddle A<2>. The shell B carries a worm-wheel b<1> which gears with a worm c on a transverse shaft C, driven through a clutch controlled by the handle I<2> and gearing c' from an electric or other motor. Inside the shell B, in alinement with the edges of the saddle A', are two ribs, one being stationary and the other b<2>, Fig. 6, movable to clamp the plate in the shell B. During the movement of the plate into the shell B, its straight edges are trimmed by cutters g on a shaft G driven by belt from a shaft F<1>. The rib b<2> is secured to a wedge-piece b<7> which is held in engagement with a corresponding piece b<8> by a spring b<6>. When in the position of rest, the piece b<8> is driven in by an arm b<9>, thus depressing the rib b<2> to admit the plate. Secured to the longitudinal bar E is a carrier E', which supports an adjustable knife for trimming the internal ribs of the plate. The head is removed, and the curved edges of the plate trimmed by cutters f, f<1>, on a shaft F driven by bevel-gear from the shaft F' which is driven by a chain from the motor shaft. When the plate is in position in the shell B, the handle I' is depressed, thus disengaging a retaining-stop from one of the clutch members and allowing a spring on the shaft C to move it into engagement with the other member. The shell B makes one revolution, and is then arrested with the rib b<2> depressed so that the plate can be removed. A series of water-pipes N is located within the shell B and, during the rotation of this, a fine spray of cooling-water is directed on to the plate. The trimmed plate is removed from the shell by a stop on a chain L on two sprocket-wheels l, which are driven by a chain l<1> from a wheel on the roller J. The wheel is thrown into gear by a clutch l<2> actuated by an arm m<1> on a longitudinal shaft M adapted to engage a stop b<5> on the shell B. As the plate leaves the shell B, it passes on to a series of rollers driven by a chain and worm gearing j<4> from the shaft F<1>. As the plate passes over these rollers, it enters a closed chamber K, where it is supported on a second series of rollers j<7> driven by means of a chain j<8>. As the plate enters through the s'ot k, it trips a lever and admits a supply of water into perforated pipes P arranged on both sides of the plate. The plate continues to move over the rotating rollers j<7> until, on issuing from the slot k<1>, it trips a second lever and cuts off the water supply. In a modification, the plate is removed from the cylinder B by a projection on a carriage reciprocated along a right and left handed threaded rod driven by a train of gear.
