Abstract
10,827. Babcock & Wilcox, and Hollick, F. W. May 7. Jib cranes.-An arrangement of planetary gear fitted on a continuously rotating shaft and operated by lever gear is applied to jib cranes for slueing purposes. The shaft B is constantly driven and has keyed to it pinions C, D driving racks E, F through pinions G, H, which are carried by disks I, J, the disk I being keyed on the sleeve K, and the disk J being free to revolve on the shaft B. The rack E is bolted to the brake wheel L running free on the shaft B, and the rack F is bolted to the disk M keyed to the sleeve K, which also carries a pinion N transmitting power to the slueing rack. The wheels L, J are fitted with brake straps 0, P operated from a lever by means of cranks and links, such that when the lever is in its extreme position on the one hand, the strap O is hard on and the strap P is free, and when in the extreme position on the other hand, the strap P is hard on and the strap 0 is free, while when the lever is in its mid position both straps are free. The crane is thus slued in opposite directions when the lever is in either extreme position, and is left stationary when the lever is in the mid position. If it is desired to stop the jib when it is revolving, the lever is pushed so as to apply the opposite brake lightly.
