Abstract

10,595. Fell, J. C., [Brown Hoisting Machinery Co.]. May 4. Percussive hand tools.-Relates to scouring- devices of the kind in which series of cutting- blades are loosely mounted upon transverse pins carried by radial supports projecting from a rotary hub, the cutting-blades being free to move, within limits, under the action of centrifugal force, and being also adapted to rotate independently of the hub, and in the plane of revolution of said hub. The cutting-blades are substantially oblong in shape, and are provided with longitudinal slots S through which pass the transverse bars P, which are mounted between two annular plates D secured to the hub A. The hub is secured to the spindle L of the driving-motor by a nut E, the interior of the hub being filled with a rubber or other resilient washer R to prevent chatter. As one series of blades, in the rotation of the apparatus, strikes the surface of the work, the blades are driven inwards along their slots, and perform a half-revolution on the pin D, so that after one revolution of the hub, the work is struck by the corners of the blades diagonally opposite those which struck it previously. The position of the centre of gravity of the blade is thus kept approximately stationary, notwithstanding the wear of the blades. When the blades have become sufficiently worn on one pair of corners, the apparatus may be removed from the spindle, turned end for end, and replaced on the spindle so that the unworn corners of the blades come into operation.
