Abstract

9486. Olson, C. J. April 21. Reciprocating-saw machines. - Relates to a hack - saw operated by compressed air or the like, and consists in arrangements for the control of the compressed fluid and in the use of an improved guide for preventing lateral vibration of the saw, and a guide for supporting the saw and controlling its descent while cutting. The saw 43, Fig. 3, is at one end pivoted to a piston-rod 21 working in a cylinder 16, which communicates through valves 26, 25 with the pressure - supplying pipe 24. The other end of the saw is attached to a spring- controlled disk 52, Fig. 2, mounted in a tube 48 pivotally secured to a standard 44, which is slidably mounted on a bar 13 passing through a sleeve in another standard 11. The valve 25 is operated by a thumb lever 31, Fig. 4, to admit the pressure to the cylinder 16 through the open valve 26. An abutment 40 on the piston - rod strikes a collar 37 on the valveoperating rod 36 of the valve 26, thereby rotating the valve to cut off the pressure supply and to effect the exhaust. The return of the saw is effected by a spring 51 acting thereon. The abutment 40 at the end of the stroke engages another collar 38 on the valve-operating rod 36, thereby reopening the cylinder 16 to the pressure. An auxiliary spring attachment serves to effect the complete rotation of the valve 26 immediately the valve-rod 36 is operated. A guide for preventing lateral vibration of the saw 43 comprises side plates 62, Fig. 9, and a roller 64 carried by an arm 58, Fig. 2, which is pressed downwards by a spring located in a hollow shank 57 adjustably mounted in the arm 13. A similar guide is mounted in the end of the casing 10. In operation, the saw descends vertically on guides 73, Fig. 1, which are supported by a bar 77 resting on the work. Stops 73<a> limit the descent of the saw. The beam &c. to be cut is clamped between angle-irons 79, 80, Fig. 1, by a plate 84 actuated by a feed-screw 83. In a modification, shown in Fig. 8, the plug valves 25, 26 are replaced by a doublepiston device 87, 88 operated by an abutment 94 on the piston-rod 93.
