9136. Mills, J. April 17. Rolling-machines.-Building bricks or blocks of clay, terra-cotta &c. are ornamented with irregular and varying surface workings by passing them while in a plastic condition between pressing-rolls a having figured surfaces. The rolls a are mounted in fixed or swivel bearings, or in a bogie carriage at right-angles or inclined to the work-pass formed between them. Adjustable guide-wheels, or a plain guide b adjustable laterally by the rotation of a screw d, are arranged opposite the opening between the rolls to guide the bricks. The bricks may be placed in boxes open at the top and bottom during the pressing operation, or may be passed direct from the mouthpiece of the brick-making machine. In the latter case, the rolls are automatically reciprocated in front of the mouthpiece in order to ensure that the bricks receive a varying impression.
