Abstract

8763. Bayne, E. D. C., and Subers, L. A. April 13. Compound fabrics ; imitations of textile fabrics.-Threads, such as those employed in the construction of unwoven waterproof fabrics, comprise strands which have been previously subjected to a definite degree of stretching and which, after being provided with a coating of flexible vulcanizable material, are immediately twisted together to form the thread. The strands 1, Fig. 1, are wound on spools, which are fitted with suitable controllable tensioning- devices, and which are all simultaneously rotated. The strands are fed to a twisting-plate immersed in a tank of liquid rubber, through which they are drawn by power rollers. A central reinforcing-strand 4, Fig. 3, of fibre or wire, preferably of the same tensile strength as all of the outer strands combined, may be provided. A metallic strand may be substituted for any one of the fibrous strands. A core 3, Fig. 9, prepared as above, may be provided with a coating 8 of flexible vulcanizable material and then wrapped round with an exterior layer 7 of similarly twisted and coated strands at an angle to those strands which compose the core. Any desired number of layers may be added, and the core may have a central reinforcing- strand of fibre or wire. A fabric, which stretches equally in all directions, is formed of parallel rows of such threads, as shown in Fig. 13, the threads in one layer crossing the threads in adjoining layers at an angle. Each thread, as it is laid, is coated with liquid rubber, the first layer being laid upon a foundation layer L of rubber or upon a solid highly polished surface. The fabric may be made tubular for hose or flat for belting. Fig. 14 shows a fabric suitable for the tyre of an automobile, the threads in the various layers being laid at an angle to each other, and each thread having a metal reinforcing-strand, so that the resulting fabric is substantially puncture-proof.
