Abstract
8517. Bradbury, L. April 8. Ornamenting.-Photographs, drawings, and paintings are reproduced upon metals and upon metal in combination with vulcanite, for use as jewellery, by first obtaining a zinc or copper block by the ordinary half-tone or line-block process, from which a mould C in powdered quartz, rock crystal, or plaster and asbestos powder or the like is taken. A thin layer of wax B is laid on the mould, and a pin or wire A is inserted in the wax. The mould is completely embedded in a metal cup D, leaving only the end of the wire protruding. The cup D has holes d in its base, and is filled with a quantity of the plaster substance D' mixed with water to a cream-like consistency. When the plaster substance D<1> is set, the wire A is withdrawn and the cup D placed over a Bunsen burner to burn the wax away. The cup, when perfectly dry, is placed in an air or steam-pressure casting- machine of the Le Cron, Solbrig-Platschick, or like type, and gold or other metal is melted in the cup over the hole formed by the removal of the wire. At the right degree of heat, the melted metal is forced into the mould by twenty or thirty pounds pressure of air or steam. A photograph is produced on metal in combination with vulcanite by pressing a piece of gold or silver foil or thin metal on the " the block," increasing the foil &c. with wax to the desired thickness, and embedding in plaster in a metal flask used for vulcanizing rubber. When the plaster is set, the flask, which is in two parts, is opened, and the wax is removed and replaced by soft rubber. The flask is then closed, and the rubber vulcanized in the usual way.
