Abstract

8262. Baese, P. April 6. Automatic alarm signals. - Letter-boxes are provided with an electric signalling-arrangement, which operates a small indicating-target or a bell, or both, when mail matter has been introduced. A switch 1 is closed by the introduction of a letter, and remains closed until the letter has been removed. At this time, a rod 15 is making contact with arches 16, 17"; consequently, the circuit containing an electromagnet 4 is closed, an anchor 8 is attracted, and the tooth 11 of a lever 12 is freed. The rod 15, which is normally held up by its connexion 14 with the lever 12, is then moved downwards by clock-work 18, 19, 20 to make contact with an arch 17<1>. While the rod is moving over the arch 17<1>, the circuit containing the bell 3 is closed, and the bell rings until the rod 15 abuts against a stop 22 and rests on insulating- material 23, 24. At the same time, by the lowering of the lever 12, a small tablet bearing the word " Letters " is caused to appear, and it remains in view until after the removal of the letters and the return of the parts to their original position. If the lever 12 be raised before the removal of the letters, the whole action is repeated and the lever 12 again falls, as the switch is still closed. On the surface of the arch 17<1>, slots carrying plates of insulating- material, which may be of different widths, may be arranged, so that the bell gives a series of sounds to distinguish it from bells employed for other services. Any other form of switch may be employed.
