5489. Jenks, G. F. March 6. Teaching arithmetic. - An appliance for teaching arithmetic comprises a frame a which is provided with one or more fixed or detachable bars b, each furnished with pegs or hooks c. Each peg or column of pegs c represents numbers of different value denoted by indicators, which may consist of reversible blocks or plates e having studs fitting into holes g in the top of the frame a. In order to represent the number of digits, counters i are hung on the pegs c. The counters are stored ready for use on one or more auxiliary pegs or pins h, and may be blank, numbered, differently coloured, or cut out to represent the shapes of different figures. For teaching decimals, a vertical strip j is suspended between the pegs c from intermediate hooks or nails k to represent the decimal point. For teaching fractions, the bars b may be divided into the necessary number of aliquot parts represented by the denominator; but when the bars b are not detachable from the frame a, independent slats l, divided up by lines m and adapted to fit or hang upon the frame a, are employed. The frame a may be suspended upon an easel or from a wall &c.
