Abstract

4800. Herringer, C. Feb. 28, 1908, [Convention date]. Safety, fouling, and locking bars.-Locking-bars are given a movement in both a vertical direction and a direction towards the rail, as well as longitudinally in the direction of the length of the rail if desired. The requisite movement is derived from cams and guides. The locking-bar 1, which may be of any section, is fixed to lugs 10, 11, 12 on a web 16, which is curved as shown in plan in Fig. 5. The lower edge of the web is also curved, as shown in Fig. 1, and has a flange 19, 21, which is guided in the jaws 33, 35 of a bracket 24 bolted to the rail 4, and is supported on a roller 13. When the locking-bar is moved longitudinally in the process of unlocking the points, the cam-surface 19, 21 causes it to move upwards and towards the rail during the first part of its movement, so as to engage either the tread of the wheels or their sides if a train is over the bar. During the latter part of its movement, the bar is moved away from the rail and downwards to its normal position. Modifications in the shape of the cam may be made, and the return movement of the bar may be obtained by reversal of its longitudinal motion.
