Abstract

3617. Marlow, T. G., and Marlow, A. A. Feb. 13. Drying india - rubber &c.-Rubber and other sensitive materials are dried and stored in a chamber or chambers having each an inlet and an outlet duct so that alternately warm dry air is passed in, producing a slight pressure, and the moist air is withdrawn by a fan or exhauster, producing a slight vacuum. The Figure shows a form of apparatus in which three drying. chambers a are arranged side by side in one casing with an air-temperature equalizing - chamber b. Warm air is drawn from the chamber b by a blower r and is forced through a delivery pipe d, branch pipes, and distributing ducts g to the drying-chambers. The valves f controlling the inlet of air are then shut, and after an interval the moist air is withdrawn through ducts k, branch pipes with valves j, and a main outlet pipe h, to an exhauster q, whence it passes to a cooling-chamber m where the moisture is deposited, and a heating-chamber o from which the warmed dry air passes to the temperatureequalizing chamber. The fans q, r are driven alternately from a motor t through belt gearing. A germicide may be sprayed into the chamber m, which, in place of cooling-pipes, may contain a desiccant such as calcium chloride. In some cases, fresh air may be passed through the heater and the moist air passed into the atmosphere. Air - distributing baffles may be arranged within the chambers a.
