Abstract

3420. Clegg, W. H. Feb. 11. Ratchet gearing. - A friction-ratchet device, for converting the oscillating motion of a crank-arm a into rotary movement of a shaft b, or a pulley or gear-wheel d, comprises a divided ring f expanded into engagement with a flange e on the pulley &c. by means of a tilting lever h as the crank-arm moves in the direction indicated by the arrow, and retracted by means of a spring m as the crank-arm moves in the opposite direction. A pair of such devices with oscillating cranks moving in opposite directions may be provided to make the rotary movement continuous; or, with two such devices, one crank-arm may be fixed to provide means for preventing the shaft &c. from running-back. The device may be applied to the take-up motion for looms described in Specification 27,587/07.
