Abstract
3395. Bartelt, F. W. Feb. 11. Chlorine is generated in small quantities bv dropping water at intervals upon a known mixture o f bleaching- powder and a dry acid metal salt, such as sodium bi-sulphate. Dry acid crystals may be used instead of the acid salt. The generating - apparatus may be arranged with an inlet so that, in drawing off the chlorine, it is mixed with other vapour or gas, such as atmospheric air, which mixture forms a useful bleaching-mixture. The generating- chamber a of the apparatus is closed by a removable bottom b, which carries the reaction material in a movable tray, and by a plug or stopper k fitting, and rotating, in its neck f. The stopper k carries a receptacle l, from which the water can pass through an inclined passage n and a drip-pipe j, containing porous material such as sponge o, when the stopper k is turned into the proper position. From the drip-pipe j. the water drips into the mouth of a trapped liquid passage i in the neck f and passes into the vessel a. When the stopper k is turned into position for the water to drop, a transverse passage m is turned into alinement with an outlet pipe g connected to a suction device, and also, if air is required to dilute the chlorine, with a hole h.
