Anthracene, dyes derived from.-Vat dyes are obtained by condensing anthraquinonemercaptans with halogenacidylaminoanthraquinones. Condensation products are specified from the following pairs of bodies :-Anthraquinone-1-mercaptan and chloracetyl-1-aminoanthraquinone, chloracetyl-1- amino-4-oxyanthraquinone, dichloracetyl-1 : 4-diaminoanthraquiuone, or dichloracetyl-1 : 5-diamino- 4 : 8-dioxyanthraquinone ; anthraquinone-2-mercaptan and chloracetyl - 1 - aminoanthraquinone, anthraquinone- 1 : 5-dimercaptan and chloracetyl-1- aminoantbraquinone. Chlorpropionylaminoanthraquinones may also be used. Specification 10,387/08 is referred to. Halogenacidylaminoanthraquinones are prepared by treating aminoanthraquinones with say, chloracetyl chloride in nitrobenzene, or chloracetic acid in the presence of phosphorus chlorides, thionyl chlorides &c., or with bromacetic acid.
