Abstract

2056. Brewster, B. F., and Wilson, W. S. Jan. 28. Coins, separating. - A mixture of coins of various denominations is placed in a machine, which separates and stacks the coins according to denominations, and counts all the coins, the register showing the total value of the coins received. The machine as described is adapted to be used for United States coinage, hut by slight adjustment may be used for other coinages. The machine is mounted on standard 2, the spindle 3 being mounted in a pivot bearing 4, which has a cutout in its lower side in which a pin 6 works to limit the rocking movement. A hand-wheel 8, fast on the spindle 3, turns the machine and carries a hopper 9 in which the coins are placed. The coin-separating disks 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 are bolted to the hand-wheel, and are provided with spacing-blocks 19, 27, 40, 47, 50, Fig. 2, in which the disks are omitted. The coins first pass on to a dollar disk 10, Fig. 8, which has apertures 18 for smaller coins to pass through, and one aperture 24 to which the dollars are guided by the boss 21, which forms, with the flanged edge of the disk, a track 22, the end 23 of the block 19 guiding the dollars to the aperture. The arm 20 of the block 19 is cut away on its underside to allow only coins flat on the plate to pass thereunder. The dollars reaching the aperture 24 pass through all the disks to the receiver 25. The half-dollar, quarter-dollar, nickel, and dime disks are reached in turn, and, being provided with similar blocks and bosses, separate the coins into their respective receivers 34, 39, 46, 49, the lower blocks being provided with apertures to allow the coins separated in the upper disks to fall right down. The dime disk has only the apertures leading to the receivers, which are attached thereto and to the counting- plate 26. This plate is provided with a frame 53, Fig. 23, which is reciprocated from the partial gear 7 on the spindle 3 by cranks 57 and rods 58, and has plungers 62, which cooperate with slides 63 to shift the coins from the receivers, through the apertures a in the plate 26, and so into shoots 66 and the receivers 67. The plungers force the bottom coins against the slides, which are pushed back until the coins are tripped into the apertures a. The slides carry racks 68 which gear with ratchet gearing to drive the shaft 60, the slides being so arranged that the dollar slide finishes actuating the shaft before the half-dollar slide starts to move the shaft, and so on. When the plungers are retracted, the pinions 70 turn loose on the shaft. The amount of turning corresponds to the value of the coin, a dollar causing one complete revolution; if any of the receivers are empty, the corresponding slide imparts no rotation to the shaft. The pinions 70 are locked at the end of their movements by locks 75, Fig. 16, which form continuations of the racks 68 and have one or more similar teeth. The racks have slots in which the locks reciprocate, and rods project from the locks through the bodies of the racks and carry springs 78 which hold the racks and locks flush. When the racks return, the springs cause them to re-engage with the pinions 70. The frame 53 has adjustable rods 80 to return the slides to their normal positions. The shaft 60 operates the register, Fig. 4, through pinions 83, 84, the latter being half the size of the former, and rigid with the first dial 85 of the register, which is marked in ten divisions 0, 5 alternately. This dial is rigid with intermittent gear 86, which has five teeth spaced around its periphery and drives an intermittent gear 87, bolted to a pinion 88 which drives the second dial 90, marked 0 ... 9. This dial is rigid with a partial gear 91, having one tooth which, as before, drives the next similar dial 95, from which the dials 100, 105 are similarly driven. The dials are locked to the shaft 106 by spring- pressed pawls, which engage a slot in the shaft when the dials are returned to zero by the head 108, before which the lower pinions are thrown out of gear by moving the yoke 110 in which the shaft 109 is mounted, by levers 111. The dial 95 is moved one step by a dollar actuating the shaft 60, and the dials 100, 105 correspond to tens and hundreds of dollars. The dials 90, 85, corresponding to the tenths and hundredths of dollars, are moved to corresponding amounts by the different coins, the register adding all the movements given by the separate coins to show the total amount.
