Abstract

1403. Bryant, G., and Ivinson, C. H. Jan. 20. Alloys.-Solders are purified or refined by dropping the solder, or its constituent metals, when in a molten and finely-divided condition into one or more solutions containing materials having a physical, chemical, or fluxing action on the solder, the flux in some cases being dissolved by the solder. The molten solder is dropped from a sieve placed at about 12 inches above the surface of the liquid, which, for example, may consist of phosphorated oil floating on a solution of zinc chloride. The resulting product is then collected and re-melted for use. The materials used in solution in water also include potassium ferrocyanide, permanganate, or bichromate, or other salt, acid, or alkali ; and, for solution in oil, sulphur, selenium, and iodine. Tin, zinc, lead, cadmium, bismuth, antimony, copper, aluminium, and silver, are mentioned as the constituent metals of the solders.
