Feeding and winding webs.-In a machine for making cylinders, cores, &c., by coating and winding a web of fabric or paper, the web P is drawn from a roll, coated with molten adhesive, and wound upon a mandrel M so that the several layers of material adhere together to form a tube &c., the controls for the several sections of the machine being placed conveniently to enable a single operator to control the machine. Pressure is applied to the mandrel by a lever 53 carrying a weight 55 adapted to be adjusted upon it by a rack and a pinion 56; the lever can be raised to release the mandrel by a handle applied to a shaft 65 that acts through wormgearing 64 upon a chain 58 secured to the lever. Either the mandrel M or the rollers L upon which it bears may be rotated positively through worm-gearing 35 driven by a motor 40. If the mandrel M is so driven, the pinion that immediately rotates it is carried by a lever controlled by compressed fluid so that adjustment can be effected as the diameter of the wound web increases. If the rollers L are driven positively a clutch 34 enables them to be disconnected. Rollers 12 for tensioning the web are adjustable by rotating a worm-wheel 13 by a. handle 15.
