Abstract
27,741. Read, W. A. Dec. 21. Metal, sheet, seaming and joining.-In a reciprocating-jaw machine for seaming or folding over the edges of metal boxes, cans, &c., a collapsible carrier supports the flanged portion of the blank and recedes as the seaming or like operation progresses. A plate b, with projecting ridges d, carries a number of spring-pressed portions e which are engaged by the jaws during seaming, and pressed against a fixed portion g of the carrier. A top plate h, of area equal to that of the carrier when closed, holds the portions in position, and is connected to the fixed portion g. In a modification, pins pass from the plate h through slots in the spring-pressed portions, and so act as stops.
