Abstract

Variable - speed and reversing gearing. - In variables p e e d gearing of the class in which a driving - crank transmits power to a ratchet grip through a connecting-rod and a link jointed to one another and also jointed to a ccnstraining-link, cranks b upon a driving-shaft a are connected, by connecting-rods g and links h pivoted together, to arms f<1> upon ratchet grips f encircling the driven shaft c. The movement of each joint between a rod g and a link h is variably constrained by a link i pivoted at j<1> upon a rod j. The rods j are movable along lines tangential to the paths of the joint-pins upon the arms f The rods j may be operated simultaneously from a rotary spindle K to vary the velocity-ratio. The links h, i are equal in length, so that the shaft c may be brought quite to rest. Reversed driving is effected by reversing the action of the grips f. The grips f may be of the class in which rollers e, Fig. 3, are adapted to become jammed in one direction in wedge-shaped pockets in the peripheries of cores such as d. Each grip f is provided with a pair of cores d, d', which have their pockets tapered so as to grip in opposite directions. The cores d, d<1> are secured to a sleeve q slidable on a key &c. on the shaft c. Either core may be brought into the plane of the grip f, according to the direction of motion of the shaft c desired.
