[Cognate Application No. 16,010, A.D. 1909, dated July 8.] Compound fabrics.-A sheet of celluloid or the like for use in the manufacture of balloons, aeroplanes, &c. less than À002 in. thick, is made by spreading liquid or pasty celluloid on a slab by means of a straight edge, brush, roller, or the apparatus shown in Fig. 3. On a slab E slides a frame D, carrying a flexible bag D<2>, pressed on to the surface of the slab by being filled with liquid such as mercury. Reinforcements, such as strands of raw silk laid parallel or crossing one another, may be placed on the slab before spreading the sheet, or they may be applied to the sheet before it is removed from the slab. The sheet after drying is removed by moistening the surface with water or a poor solvent such as alcohol.
