Abstract

25,416. Lange, G. Nov. 25. Points and switches, railway and tramway, operating mechanically from the vehicles. Mounted adjacent to the inner side of each of the rails 1 on the shaft 11, is a vertical lever 10 connected up to the point tongues 3 and to the point-indicating signal C as shown. Each lever 10 carries a bar 19 slidably connected to it by the interaction of bolts 20, 20<1>, and slots 17, 18, which in turn carries a nose 31, 32 pivotally connected to its upper end. Normally the points are set for the main line, and the lever 10 rests as shown in Fig. 4 with its nose 31 below the upper surface of the rail. On approaching the points facing-ways the wheels are arranged to depress one arm of a pivoted lever 24 and thereby raise the bar 19 and bring the nose 31 into a position so that it can be caught by a depending arm z on the vehicle. The lever 10 is then swung over and the points are thereby operated. The bar 19 is kept in its raised position against the action of the spring 37 by the pawl 22 engaging teeth formed on the lever 10. The nose 31 is normally held fixed to the bar 19 by the spring-held catch 30 but is liberated, when the lever 10 is swung over, by the stop 33 engaging the retracting-levers 34. Simultaneously with the release of the nose, another stop 36 operates the pawl 22 so as to permit the bar 19 to fall and, through the action of the pulley 40 on the wire 38, to pull the nose 31 back into its normally depressed position. To retain the levers 10 in either of their end positions, a weighted arm 15 is loosely mounted on the shaft 11 and is connected to the lever 10 by the guides 14 which permit a certain amount of lost motion. The lever 10 on one side of the track is fixed to the shaft 11 while the other is loose but connected to it through a linkage so that the two levers move in opposite directions when the shaft 11 is operated, only one being in a position to be operated on by the lever 24 and arm z at one time.
