Abstract
19,628. Parkinson, B. R., and Woodall, H. Sept. 18. [Patent of Addition to No. 23,414, A.D. 1907.] Tube expanders.- Expanding-mandrels for use with nipples of the kind described in Specification No. 23,414, A.D. 1907, are in two sections. The lower section with a conical head 7<1> is held in the nipple 2 by a nut 8, which seats on the upper end of the' nipple, or by other suitable means. The nipple with the mandrel section is screwed into the main, Fig. 1, by an ordinary machine, which is then removed. Packing 25 and a saddle-piece 24 are then secured in place by a junction-piece 10 screwed on to the nipple. The junction-piece has a ballvalve 21 carried on a rod 20 passing through a gland 18 screwed to the lateral branch of the junction - piece. Any other form of valve adapted to be used in the same way may be substituted for the valve 21. An upper screwthreaded mandrel-section 9 is then screwed to the lower mandrel section, and the mandrel is drawn through the nipple, to expand the lower beaded end, by a nut 14 bearing on the upper end of the sleeve 13, screwed to the junctionpiece. The internal fluid pressure raises the mandrel until a boss 9<1> seats against the upper end of the sleeve 13 and thus prevents the escape of fluid. The ball-valve 21 is pushed in to close the orifice 23, as shown in Fig. 3. The mandrel and the sleeve 13 are removed, and a plug 15 is screwed in to close the upper end of the nipple 2, Fig. 4. The valve 21 and gland 18 are removed from the lateral branch of the junction-piece, to which the service pipe is then attached, the plug 15 being finally raised to permit flow of the fluid and the upper end of the junction-piece closed by a screw cap.
