Abstract

16,595. Glascodine, R. T. Aug. 6. Sanding rails. - The sanding-apparatus of a vehicle is detachably connected to the brake-rigging so as to be operated when the brakes are operated by either of two braking systems. As shown in Fig. 2, two sand-boxes a are used. Each box has a distributing pipe, closed at the upper end by an arm c, on a vertical rocking spindle d, which spindle has an operating-arm arranged beneath the box. Both operating-arms may be connected together for simultaneous operation as through links f, i and a bell-crank lever g, j. The air cylinder k of an automatic brake system is connected through the usual floating lever o with the rods m, n connected to the brake shoes. The floating lever o can be operated also by hand through a rod p. The brake rod n is in two parts, pivotally connected at q to one end of a lever r, pivoted at s, and acted upon by a spring t. A rod y is connected to the lever r, and, through a bell-crank lever w, x and link v, with the linkage connected to the sand-boxes. The application of the brakes causes the parts to pass from the position shown in full lines to that shown in dotted lines, thereby actuating the sandboxes. By withdrawing the pin y', the brakes can be applied without operating the sanding-means.
